Description
The X-540 speakers use FDD2 (Frequency Directed Dual Driver) technology to produce a uniform soundfield anywhere in the room. Immerse yourself in the game using the selectable matrix mode, which automatically creates 5.1 surround sound from common 2-channel stereo sources. The compact satellites are wall-mountable, and a special clip lets you place the center channel speaker on top of most flat-panel monitors to reduce desktop clutter. Use the wired control center to control volume and bass levels or connect headphones to enjoy your games and music privately.

Affordable 5.1 solution for gaming Mar 12, 2010 Logitech X-540 Speakers
The Logitech X-540 speakers are a full 5.1 stereo surround sound system intended for PCs, gaming consoles, or any system that outputs audio through 3.5mm jacks. I installed the X-540 onto a gaming computer with a built-in Realtek 7.1 HD sound board.
The X-540 has short wires for the front and center speakers, and the rear speakers have longer wires. The key to setting up a 5.1 system is to have the speakers located symmetrically. Many rooms and desks do NOT allow this to happen, so caveat emptor. There is a control panel with the power button, volume, matrix mode, and subwoofer volume knobs. The matrix mode emulates 5.1 sound with legacy stereo applications.
In games like GTR Evolution and Stranglehold, the sound is only stereo. I found Rainbow Six Vegas 2 to natively support 5.1 sound, so I had much better situational awareness without using the matrix mode.
The subwoofer is very compact and produces loud low-frequency thumps. The center speaker and other mid-range speakers do a great job of replication mid to high notes. The benefit of using an analog audio interface is the lack of CPU overhead required to process the audio, along with the lack of some quirks with using USB audio.
The center speaker mounts very easily to most LCD monitors and does not vibrate or come apart. The side speakers can sit on a shelf or hang on the wall with its versatile rotating base.
Pros: Easy to use and assemble, great reproduction of low to high frequency notes especially for gaming, matrix mode works well - but not as well as native 5.1 support
Cons: Difficult to find spots for the rear speakers
Overall: 4/5 stars
Computer speakers Mar 08, 2010 The speakers were received on time and in perfect condition. They operate as described, good, but not great, but value for the money. As other reviews indicated I had to buy RCA speaker extension wires, but @ $ 1.99 for 10 feet, this was no problem.
these will amaze you.. Mar 05, 2010 I was looking to create a affordable home theater experience and I managed to do so for just 300 dollars. I have these speakers plugged to an hd 22 inch screen and mainly use my ps3 for gaming and music. For its size and price, the surround sound these speakers provide is more than good. When u crank the volume up and set the speakers correctly, as in front left, front right, back left, back right, you'll pick up every sound that you normally wouldn't hear. Now of course, these are relatively small speakers, so if you're trying to set up home theater in a spacious room like a living room, then maybe you should shop for a more expensive product and bigger. However, if you're looking for surround sound in a bedroom or a small room compared to a living room, then this is the way to go. The cables attached are long in size, so you dont have to worry about length. The back speakers can be hung on wall or used on a stand. My only complain with these speakers is that you must set the volume at least halfway to get a loud enough sound. If you set the volume less than midway, you can barely hear anything, but again it depends on how close you are sitting by the speakers. Bottom line though, I suggest these to anyone looking for a good surround sound experience and gaming.
better than i expected! Mar 05, 2010 for the price i really did'nt think i would be getting much as far as sound quality, but i was so wrong they are very good speaker. i was replacing altec lansing speakers that i paid almost three times as much for, they were great but after a few years my sub stopped working. i didn't want to spend as much as i had in the past so, i got the logitech x-540 speakers. i really got top of the line speakers for bottom of the line budget.

It's OK but... Feb 24, 2010 I got this speaker System at Circuit City (R.I.P) a couple years ago. They sound great but the Cords are just way to short and makes it so no matter what you possibly do you cannot set these speakers up CORRECTLY! just every Cord is too short even the control and it's Hardwired in like i said you cant really do anything to remedy it
