4We have used it for years.  Feb 23, 2010
We have used the Total Protection on all of our computers since 1999. This year I waited too long to order the new disc (web renewal is way overpriced). For several days everyone in the household had to deal with the annoying popups telling us our subscription had expired. McAfee works well and we have had no problems the 10+ years we have used it. However, I have found it a pain to renew, uninstall and reinstall every year.

I installed Microsoft Security Essentials on my daughters netbook instead of McAfee Total Protection. It seems to be working well, she will not have to renew any subscriptions next year. I think after all the annoying popups this will be the last year we purchase the over-priced McAfee. McAfee has lost a long time customer.

Edit 3/3/2010:
Today we uninstalled this product from one of the laptops after receiving those annoying popups telling us we hadn't registered when in fact we had. The third computer had no problems with McAfee so we will continue to use it till it expires. When it does we will uninstall McAfee and start using Security Essentials on it also. Sorry McAfee!

1Watch out for McAfee unauthorized charge for renewal  Feb 17, 2010
I had a McAfee contract which expires next month. Recently I bought an Apple computer (has its own firewall & security), I do not need to install McAfee in it. A month before the previous contract expires, McAfee charged my credit card without my knowledge or approval. I didn't even plan to renew it. But since my card info is in their system, they just charged me for renewal without my authorization. When I called for refund, the rep tried to sell me other McAfee merchandise. He kept asking for my explanation (which is very simple, YOU DON'T CHARGE SOMEBODY WITHOUT APPROVAL). It took me more than 20 minutes to complain & insisted that I don't need any product from them to get my refund. WATCH OUT FOR UNAUTHORIZED CHARGES from them...............

3Atleast 3 GB of ram to run it  Feb 15, 2010
If you have 2 GB of ram then it can slow down your computer quite a bit.Not recommended for those with less than 2.I could have my computer running and doing nothing for an hour or more and it will not update. Then it seems like when I go to do something it updates. Before I go and do stuff I check for updates and a window says "your products are up to date".Then a few minutes later it updates 8-|.Runs at the most inconvenient times.Scan times can be on the slow side even when doing a quick scan. You can chose which products you want to install that are included on the disc, but if you chose not to install something like anti-spam you will get a message stating that your computer is not protected and anti-spam is turned off even if it's not installed.

1We still got a virus with this.  Jan 15, 2010
I bought this hoping to keep my computer from getting viruses and it didn't work.

1Waste of time and money.  Dec 28, 2009
I learned from previous experience not to install Mcafee over existing software. I removed all traces of Mcafee from my computer before installing this new version. Installation was quick but the new software shows to have expired and Mcafee is trying to sell me a renewal.
I repeated the installation again with same result. Tech support??---don't waste your time. I have switched all 6 of my computers to another brand of security software with excellent results. Security Software should not be a hastle to install and use. Maybe someday Mcafee will start to listen to their customers again. Until then I recommend you avoid their products.
