Description

The Tudors presents the rarely dramatized, tumultuous early years of King Henry VIII’s nearly 40 year, omnipotent reign (1509-1547). In addition to his famous female consorts and 20+ year marriage to Catherine of Aragon to the infamous dalliance with Anne Boleyn, the series delves in to Henry’s most notable political relationship and the deconstruction of the Roman Catholic Church in England.

Bought this for my husband who really enjoys this show. We are both pleased with the purchase.

5An excellent and inspiring series  Jul 15, 2010
I recently finished the full 4 season run of The Tudors. Basically it retells the major events during the reign of Henry VIII in a manner that makes it dramatic and exciting. Jonathan Rhys Meyers, for any personal faults he may have, plays an excellent king. He really brought a personality to the role that impressed me. The supporting cast is also excellent; I particularly enjoyed the portrayal of Anne Boleyn.

You will see varying comments about the historical accuracy of the show. For a non-historian like myself, it was quite good. When a character would die (to avoid spoilers!) my wife and I would look them up on Wikipedia. The series sticks pretty closely to the large strokes of what really happened. Yes, they do play around with timelines and even make major changes like combining Henry's 2 sisters into one ... but for the most part it is pretty close. If that sounds egregious to you, then I'd recommend just sticking to real histories. It actually got us interested in reading about the historical events.

The creative license they take makes for an entertaining ride. For events that put me to sleep in school, this show manages to maintain a good level of suspense and anticipation. Of course, it probably helped that I didn't remember anything from my classes! The costumes were particularly excellent. Henry has a different opulent outfit in nearly every major scene.

In all it was quite an enjoyable ride and I highly recommend the series unless you are a historical purist.

4A Decadent Look at History  Jul 11, 2010
The creator of this show admits on the website that this was not meant to be historically accurate. Instead, this Showtime original series is nothing less than what Showtime has come to represent; sensationalized storylines, sexy, lustful characterizations, and an all-around fantastic romp for mature audiences.

As someone who had a prior interest and some knowledge of the period, I was skeptical of this series. Having watched other movies and television shows which covered Henry VIII and the period around him in a more accurate light, I started watching simply because of Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Henry Cavill. However, the compelling storylines kept me watching episode after episode. While Showtime has, as usual, not shied away from explicit sex scenes a la medieval "Californication", for the most part, given the already dramatic history of England's break from the Catholic Church, its not too far-fetched to imagine some of the events that transpire through the series.

This show is probably best suited for those of us who are willing to not take the historical aspect of the story too seriously and who enjoy watching beautifully shot and definitely lush period pieces.

5I got hooked  Jul 02, 2010
My daughter told me that the Tudors was very intertaining and I would love watching it. She was right, I was hooked on the series before I got throught the first disk.

5Merry old England  Jun 28, 2010
Not paying atention in history, I did not know very much about King Henry. This is very interesting and the show is very well done. Great acting and I'm ready for Season two.
